WHAT DOES BIRTHDAY MEAN TO YOU?

WHAT DOES BIRTHDAY MEAN TO YOU?

Birthday is the day of one's birth; the day on which a person was born. It is also the anniversary of one's birth, an anniversary of the day on which a person was born (or the celebration of it). Birthday means so many things to many people across the globe. To some people it’s all about having fun. To some people it’s making merry and having big party. Some see it from different angles but here are my views; I perceived birthday not to be a day one drinks oneself to stupor, losing ones senses and embarrassing close relations. It’s supposed to be a day of joy, merriment and a day of sober reflection.

A day like this makes me to be more sober. It’s not as if I planned it that way but I chose to be calmed down, steady, and to reflect over so many things especially His eternal purpose for my life. Am I at the epicenter of His will for my life? Is my will not in conflict with His will? Am I fulfilling His purpose on earth? Do I just live life for living sake? Do I really make progress or not both spiritually and otherwise? Is there anything added to my life positively for the past one year now? These are the questions/things that preoccupied my mind in a day especially like today.

However, may I surprise you a bit; I hardly celebrate birthday personally although I do it for my children and wife! Please get me right; it’s not evil to celebrate ones birthday! It is not that I don’t have money to throw a big party but I ask myself; does it worth it?  Is that what birthday is all about? God gave us life and time for a purpose! Day, Week, Month and Year they are serving a purpose and it takes one who has understanding and divine perspective on this issue to really reflect and know how to appreciate God the more. David gained understanding into this, that life truly is vapour, today you are here and tomorrow one is no more. Psalm39:4-6 says;

“LORD, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am. Indeed, you have made my days as handbreadths, and my age is as nothing before You; certainly every man at his best state is but vapour. Surely every man walks about like a shadow; surely they busy themselves in vain; he heaps up riches, and does not know who will gather them.”  (NKJV)

Please check the same verse(s) in Amplified Bible;

“Lord, make me to know my end and [to appreciate] the measure of my days—what it is; let me know and realize how frail I am [how transient is my stay here].Behold, You have made my days as [short as] handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in Your sight. Truly every man at his best is merely a breath! Selah [pause, and think calmly of that]!Surely every man walks to and fro—like a shadow in a pantomime; surely for futility and emptiness he is in turmoil; each one heaps up riches, not knowing who will gather them.” - Psalm 39:4-6 (Amplified Bible)

However, please did you see that our stay here is so short and temporary and if one is not careful enough one might miss the real essence, meaning, substance and significance of coming to this world? In other words, instead of jumping from pillar to post, looking for the money you don’t have to impress the people you don’t like on the day of your birthday, why not turn to God in prayer as David did in Psalm 90:12;

“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom”. (NKJV)

I love the way “The Message” put it across:

“Oh! Teach us to live well!
  Teach us to live wisely and well!”
       - The Message (MSG)

So it is good to number our days and in numbering our days is in living wisely and well with yourself and others. This is real essence of birthday! Don’t live loosely! “Live wisely and well!” Don’t indulge in those things that will make you to regret coming to planet earth!  Love God, love your wife or husband, love your neighbor, love your friends and pray for your enemies. Be good to people, impact and affect life positively. Be an agent of change. Let it be acknowledged by all and God that you live wisely and well and you left the earth better than the way you met it. And in doing this remember you can’t do it by your strength.

You need God! You need Wisdom. Wisdom is a person; the Lord Jesus Christ (1Corinthians 1:30). Until He lives the life through you, you will not be able to live a meaningful life. He is the reason for every moment including your birthday. Always redeeming the time for the day is full of evil and remembers that it’s not how far you live on this part of eternity but how WISELY AND WELL you live in the sight of God and men.

God bless you!
